Former Mwea Member of Parliament together with four suspects facing charges of theft of a motor vehicle, were each released on a Sh500, 000 cash bail monday, or, an alternative of Sh1 million bond with similar surety by a Murang’a court.
Senior Resident Magistrate Eric Analo quashed application by the prosecution to hold the former MP Peter Njuguna Gitau together with the other four suspects in custody for 21 days to allow completion of investigations.
According to an affidavit presented in the court, the suspects are accused of stealing a motor vehicle belonging to Murang’a county government on November 4, 2025.
A team of defense counsels, led by Robert Ndumbi opposed the prosecution application telling the court that their client was arrested on the night of January 14, and he remained in custody for more than 24 hours before he was arraigned in court.
Ndumbi said their client, after he was arrested, was taken to DCI headquarters in Nairobi and on January 16, he was taken to Murang’a police station, where he was booked.
The Magistrate ordered the police to conclude with the investigations, as the suspects were released on bond and ordered to be reported at Murang’a police station on weekly basis, waiting for completion of the investigations.
