Vihiga leaders address rising motorcycle taxi theft

Three assistant chiefs from Tigoi, Gamalenga and Kitagwa sub-locations in Vihiga County yesterday convened a public meeting at Gambogi Market to address rising cases of motorcycle theft in the area.

The insecurity, particularly in the Hamisi region, has prompted motorcycle (boda boda) operators to devise strategies to curb the vice and protect their livelihoods. The meeting followed an incident a day earlier in Jepkoyai Ward, Hamisi Sub-County, where a young man suspected of motorcycle theft was killed by angry residents. Another suspect was arrested while in possession of a stolen motorcycle.

Chairman of boda boda operators in the wider Hamisi area, Walter Kegode, said members had resolved that all operators must be registered and adhere strictly to their by-laws. He noted that proper registration would help identify individuals allegedly collaborating with criminals to rob and harm genuine riders.

Kegode added that suspects often monitor their targets’ movements before launching surprise attacks. He urged operators to remain vigilant and cooperate with local authorities in reporting suspicious activities.

Gambogi boda boda chairman Newton Kibet said operators had long struggled with motorcycle theft, occasionally leading to tensions with authorities over how the matter was handled.

He revealed that a security raid conducted on Monday, February 16, 2026 led to the recovery of several stolen motorcycles. Kibet warned those involved in theft to abandon crime and engage in productive ventures such as farming.
