The Kajiado County government has warned the public against illegal movement and slaughter of donkeys, declaring that all such activities are prohibited with immediate effect.
In a public notice, the County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock, Irrigation and Fisheries, Francis Sakuda, emphasized that all stakeholders must obtain valid health certificates and movement permits before transporting donkeys.
The permits must be issued by the County Director of Veterinary Services’ office.
According to the notice, any movement or slaughter of donkeys without the required documentation violates the Meat Control Act and the Animal Diseases Act.
Offenders risk fines, imprisonment, confiscation of animals and prosecution in line with the law.
Large numbers of donkeys have been reported crisscrossing the county without valid documents and being transported to unknown destinations.
The directive comes barely two weeks after 34 donkeys were slaughtered illegally in Oloirien, in Kajiado West Constituency.
Following the incident, county health officials supervised the safe disposal of the carcasses, while local police confiscated two vehicles found at the scene, even as investigations continue.
Authorities say cases of illegal donkey slaughter have been on the rise in Kajiado West and Central constituencies, with perpetrators reportedly transporting and selling the meat to unsuspecting consumers in Nairobi County.
The county government has urged residents and traders to comply with the regulations and report any suspicious activities to enforcement agencies.
