Murang’a County Government has commissioned Nginyi–Kakuzi (Gikono) footbridge, a key infrastructure project linking Gatanga and Maragua constituencies.
The footbridge will end years of hardship for residents who have struggled to cross the river, especially during the rainy season.
Speaking during the commissioning of the bridge, Governor Irungu Kang’ata said the county-funded project will enhance connectivity between the two areas, facilitate trade and improve access to schools, health facilities and other essential services.
The Governor noted that the bridge will also unlock the economic potential of the Kakuzi-Mitumbiri area by easing the movement of people and goods while enhancing public safety.
Governor Kang’ata lauded the close collaboration between the county administration and Kakuzi Ward Member of County Assembly, Stephen Muigai, in delivering the project, saying partnerships between elected leaders are critical in accelerating development.
“This bridge is a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when leaders work together for the benefit of wananchi,” added the Governor.
According to Kang’ata, the Nginyi–Kakuzi Bridge is part of the Murang’a County Government’s ongoing investment in transport infrastructure aimed at improving accessibility, enhancing public safety and supporting socio-economic development across the county
He also urged residents to distinguish between projects implemented by the County Government and those undertaken by the National Government to enhance accountability and public participation in development.
MCA Stephen Muigai said the bridge fulfils a long-standing promise to improve infrastructure in the ward, adding that it will significantly improve the livelihoods of residents by making movement easier and safer.
He thanked the county administration for prioritizing the project, noting that improved infrastructure will spur economic growth and attract more investment to the area.
Residents welcomed the commissioning of the bridge, saying it will save lives and reduce the challenges they have endured while crossing the river.
Peter Kimani, a resident of Kakuzi, said the river had posed a major risk to the community for many years, particularly during heavy rains when water levels rose and made crossing impossible.
He noted that several people had previously lost their lives while attempting to cross the swollen river, adding that the new bridge will eliminate the danger and enable residents to carry out their daily activities without fear.
A boda boda operator, Wilson Njeri, said the bridge will improve transport services by allowing operators to ferry passengers safely across the river throughout the year.
Wilson observed that easier access between the two areas is expected to increase business opportunities for transport operators, traders and farmers while stimulating economic activities.
