Residents of Cianda Ward, Kiambaa Sub County in Kiambu county have welcomed the commissioning of solar powered street lights under the Angaza Kiambu program, terming it a major boost to security and a cost saving measure for the county.
The #AngazaKiambu program, under the Department of Public Works and Utilities, entails the installation of more than 60 solar-powered streetlights in each ward across the county’s 12 sub-counties, targeting a total of 4,000 units.
It is implemented by the County Government of Kiambu, involving the installation of 24 solar street lights across Cianda, Kawaida, Kamukunji, and Delta areas among others points in Cianda ward.
Speaking during the commissioning, Kiambu Governor, Kimani Wamatangi said the initiative is aimed at enhancing safety while reducing the cost of electricity previously incurred through conventional lighting.
He noted that the county had been spending up to Sh700,000 on electricity bills paid to KPLC, a cost expected to decline following the transition to solar energy.
“The streetlights will be powered by the sun during the day, which saves the county government money that can now be redirected to other development projects,” he said.
The governor also announced that Karuri Hospital is set to be officially opened by the end of August, a move expected to improve access to healthcare services in the area.
Local traders and residents welcomed the project, noting that improved lighting will enhance business operations and security at night.
Wangui wa Matunda, an Aspirant from Banana, said the county government has been supportive to local traders.
“The county government has really been supportive to the locals,” she said.
Residents from the Kawaida area praised the initiative, saying it has brought visible change to the community. Samuel Njoroge, a resident, said the project has positively impacted the area.
“We are very pleased, and we congratulate the county government on the Angaza program,” he said.
The solar street lighting project forms part of the county’s broader strategy to promote sustainable energy while improving public infrastructure across Kiambu County.
