Masalani Township in Ijara sub-county, Garissa County, was yesterday plunged into unprecedented darkness after the area suffered a severe power outage lasting about six hours, leading to massive disruption of business in the area.
The power outage is reported to have hit the area starting from 4.00pm up to about 9.50pm in the night.
Residents attributed the power outage to a defective transformer opposite the Masalani water supply.
Meanwhile, local residents have called upon Ijara leaders led by Governor Nathif Jama, area MP, Abdi Ali among others to intervene and even engage the Energy CS, Opiyo Wandayi to alleviate their sufferings
They underscored that power is an important ingredient for local development, especially for thriving businesses.
Former Chairman, Garissa County Council, Mohamed Gure; Ijara Youth Leader, Salah Yarrow; and Masalani Watchdog Chairman, Abdullahi Abdi called for urgent upgrading of Masalani KPLC substation and establishment of huduma centers for Masalani residents as well as banking services since local residents travel all the way to Hola or Garissa for the services.
They asked KCB and Equity Bank to consider establishing branches in the expansive Ijara constituency. Hola, town is 48 km from Masalani town, while Garissa town is 200 km away.
