Kiambu County advertises 300 nursing jobs as health facilities expand

Kiambu County Government has advertised 300 positions for the Registered Nurse III role, as it moves to strengthen its health workforce amid an expansion of health facilities.

The positions, advertised by the Kiambu County Public Service Board, are in Job Group 11 and will be offered on contract terms.

Applicants are required to be Kenyan citizens, holders of a diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing or Kenya Registered Midwifery, and possess a registration certificate and valid practising license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.

All applicants are expected to drop their papers at the County Public Service Board offices in Thika sub-County before the August 28, 2026 deadline.

The recruitment comes three months after Governor Kimani Wamatangi hosted nurses during the 2026 Nurses Week celebrations, where he pledged to hire more nurses to cater to the increasing workload following the growing population.

He also commended them for maintaining health services during a period of industrial action.

Wamatangi praised the nurses for their dedication, saying they had ensured Kiambu continued to function and patients continued to receive care. He also highlighted promotions and timely salary payments as part of measures aimed at improving the welfare of health workers.

During the same forum, Githunguri Ward MCA and Health Committee Chair Joseph Muhia Kamau called for the recruitment of more nurses to meet the increasing demand in county facilities.

Nurse Martha Mburu also raised concerns over staffing disparities, noting that while one facility had 183 nurses, another was operating with only two nurses supported by partners.

“We are urging for increased staffing to reduce burnout and improve quality of care,” she added.

The latest recruitment drive comes as the county continues to expand its health infrastructure. The 2026 County Fiscal Strategy Paper indicates that several facilities, including Kahawa Sukari, Thogoto, Karuri, Gachororo, Ndenderu-Ruaka, Ndumberi, Gathiga and Ndeiya, are at advanced stages of completion, while the county has set a target of completing and operationalizing additional facilities.

Meanwhile, nurses countrywide are engaged in an ongoing strike that has disrupted services in public health facilities, including Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.

The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) has maintained that the industrial action is aimed at pressing for implementation of pending Collective Bargaining Agreements and the absorption of health workers recruited under the Universal Health Coverage programme.

The strike, which entered the third week, as talks involving the union, Ministry of Labour, Council of Governors and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), were pushed to Thursday, August 20, 2026.
