Police in Ruiru have arrested 12 people and seized hundreds of litres of illicit alcohol and narcotic drugs in a fresh crackdown sparked by growing concern over harmful brews blamed for deaths in parts of Kiambu County.
The operation, led by Deputy County Commissioner Julius Too, netted 211 litres of traditional muratina brew, assorted suspected counterfeit liquor brands, and 378 rolls of bhang.
Several unlicensed pubs where the illegal products were allegedly being sold were also shut down during the raid.
Too, who was accompanied by Ruiru Sub-County Police Commander Charles Kibathi, said the operation targeted outlets dealing in illicit alcohol and drugs as authorities move to prevent further harm from dangerous products.
He cautioned residents against consuming alcoholic drinks from unverified sources, urging them to report individuals involved in the manufacture and sale of illicit brews.
“The public should be vigilant and report those behind the sale of these harmful products,” Too said.
The 12 suspects are expected to be arraigned in court, while the confiscated drinks and narcotics will be retained as exhibits.
Kibathi said no death had been reported in Ruiru Sub-County as a result of consuming the harmful brews but warned that the security team would sustain the crackdown.
He said police remained on high alert and would continue raiding outlets suspected of selling illicit alcohol and narcotic drugs.
“The exercise will continue daily until these harmful drinks are eradicated,” Kibathi said.
The crackdown comes amid heightened concern across Kiambu days after three people died in Kimende, Lari Sub-County, after consuming suspected illicit alcohol, with two others reportedly left in critical condition.
