Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has called on residents to safeguard development projects implemented by the county government, citing increasing cases of vandalism that have led to the destruction of public infrastructure across the county.
The Governor’s appeal follows a series of incidents in which individuals have allegedly vandalized and stolen water pipes, drainage systems, doors at Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres, and dispensaries.
Speaking to journalists at her office in Matuga, Achani expressed disappointment over recent acts of vandalism targeting sports facilities in Taru, Samburu, Mihirini, and Mwangoni areas, where gates were destroyed by unknown individuals.
“It is unfortunate that a few individuals continue to destroy projects meant to benefit the entire community. We must all take collective responsibility in protecting public facilities because these projects are funded using taxpayers’ money,” said Achani.
The Governor warned that vandalism not only delays service delivery but also increases the cost of maintaining and rehabilitating damaged infrastructure.
She urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities, emphasizing that community participation is key to ensuring the sustainability of development projects.
“County projects belong to the people of Kwale. Protecting them is a shared responsibility, and I urge residents to work closely with local leaders and security agencies to curb these acts,” she added.
Despite the setbacks, Achani said her administration has already commenced rehabilitation works at Taru, Samburu, Mihirini, Mwangoni, and Kiwegu sports grounds as part of ongoing efforts to improve sporting infrastructure and create opportunities for youth development.
She reiterated the importance of preserving government investments, noting that well maintained public facilities contribute significantly to social and economic growth within the county.
