Operations at Maua law courts came to a standstill on Thursday following a peaceful demonstration by advocates protesting against alleged corruption and gross misconduct by a section of magistrates at the law court.
The advocates who were dressed in their official gowns gathered within the court premises holding placards and chanting slogans demanding accountability and integrity in the judiciary.
They accused magistrates serving in Courts 3, 4 and 5 of engaging in corrupt practices, insulting advocates and frequent absenteeism from duty contributing to a huge backlog of cases at the Maua Law Courts
The protesters further lamented that Court 2 currently has no magistrate, with only Court One with magistrate Felix Kombo operating effectively which they described as clean and professional.
Addressing the Press the chairperson of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Meru Chapter, Michael Ngujiri said the advocates could no longer remain silent as corruption and unethical practices continued to undermine justice in Maua Law Courts.
Ngujiri further revealed that they had already presented their grievances to the Judicial Service Commission and Chief Justice Martha Koome on July 1, 2025 but no response or solution has been provided so far.
“We are demanding fairness, professionalism and integrity in the dispensation of justice. The people of Maua and Igembe at large deserve a judiciary they can trust,” Ngujiri said, adding that the continued silence from the authorities concerned was deeply frustrating and forced them to take the matter to the streets.
The advocates demanded that the affected courts be sanitized with immediate effects and urged the JSC to take disciplinary action against the magistrates in question. They further noted that if the matter is not addressed promptly, they will continue holding peaceful demonstrations every Thursday until their concerns are heard and acted upon.
Police were also present to maintain peace and order as the protest continued within the court compound.
The frustrated advocates vowed to continue pressing for reforms and accountability within Maua Law Courts, insisting that they will not relent until justice is restored.
