Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has urged young people who have attained the required age of 18 years to register as voters and participate in the country’s democratic processes.
Barasa said voter registration was important in enabling citizens to exercise their constitutional right to elect leaders and have a voice in decisions affecting their lives.
The governor spoke on Saturday at St John’s Mukhweya Secondary School in Kholera Ward, Matungu Sub-County, where he presided over a fundraiser towards the completion of a girls’ dormitory.
He urged eligible residents who had not registered as voters to do so while encouraging those without National Identity cards in order to participate in the next forthcoming general elections.
Barasa said active participation in civic affairs was essential in strengthening democracy and ensuring citizens played their role in shaping the country’s future.
He also said plans were underway, in collaboration with Matungu MP Peter Nabulindo, to establish a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Matungu Sub-County, which would provide local youth with opportunities to pursue health-related courses.
The governor was accompanied by Nabulindo, area MCA Karim Osama Tingili, county officials led by Chief Officer for Livestock Production, Veterinary Services and Fisheries Oscar Odunga, teachers, parents and other education stakeholders.
