Bursaries transform lives in Kikuyu

For Juliet Mumbua, a single mother of three, the bursary programme in Kikuyu Constituency, Kiambu County, has been nothing short of a lifeline.

The programme has enabled her eldest son to complete his education at Kahuho Boys High School, an achievement she once thought impossible.

“Without this support, I wouldn’t have managed,” Juliet said with gratitude, hoping that the programme would also help her Form Two son achieve his dreams.

Juliet’s story is just one among thousands that underscore the transformative impact of the 2025 Secondary Schools bursary programme whose issuance was concluded on Friday, January 17, 2025.

The number of applicants has increased exponentially, with over 3,000 residents turning up in Kikuyu Ward offices on the final day.

Member of Parliament for Kikuyu Constituency Kimani Ichung’wah has steered the programme, which has reportedly recorded significant participation across the constituency’s five wards.

Sigona Ward had approximately 2,200 applicants, while Nachu Ward had over 1,300, Karai Ward with 1,700, Kinoo Ward about 700, and 3,000 for Kikuyu Ward.

National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) Chairman Simon Ngugi in Kikuyu Constituency revealed that Sh47 million had been allocated for bursaries in the 2024/2025 financial year.

Sh23 million would support secondary school students, while the remaining funds would benefit higher learning institutions, technical colleges, and other tertiary institutions.

This year’s allocation marks a remarkable increase from Sh22.7 million allocated in 2024, reflecting a strong commitment to improving access to education and reducing dropout rates.

Beyond traditional education, the bursary programme also supports short courses that empower individuals with practical skills.

For example, many boda-boda riders have benefitted from funding that covers licensing and professional training, enhancing road safety and professionalism in the transport sector.

By prioritising education and skill development, the bursary programme has transformed individual lives and has contributed to the overall development of communities.

For Juliet and many others like her, this initiative is a source of hope and the promise of a brighter future for their children.
