Catholic faithful mark Corpus Christi with procession

Catholic faithfuls in Kiserian joined millions of Christians worldwide on Sunday to celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, commemorating the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist.

The faithful gathered at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Kiserian, for Mass and a Eucharistic procession through the town as part of the annual celebration.

The feast follows last Sunday’s celebration of the Holy Trinity and focuses on the significance of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist.

During his homily, Rev. Fr. Joseph Waratho reminded Christians that beyond physical nourishment, there is spiritual nourishment found in Christ.

“The bread that satisfies the body is important, but there is also the bread that satisfies the soul, and that is the Body of Christ,” he said.

Fr. Waratho explained that the procession through Kiserian town symbolized taking Christ into the community and praying for blessings upon homes, businesses, schools, and other institutions.

He noted that just as Jesus moved through different towns during His ministry, Christians today continue to bring His presence into society through prayer and witness.

One of the congregants, Ruth Mueni, described the celebration as a spiritually enriching experience.

“Today has been a blessed day for me as a Catholic faithful because it reminds us of the Body and Blood of Christ. Through the procession, we sang and prayed for God’s blessings upon our town, businesses, roads, and schools, especially at a time when many challenges are affecting our schools,” she said.

Another congregant, Philip Oketch, said the sharing of the Eucharist symbolizes unity among believers.

“Just as Jesus broke the bread and shared it with His disciples, the Eucharist reminds us that although we are many, we are one body in Christ. As the political season approaches, Kenyans should embrace unity,” he said.

Fr. Waratho said the Corpus Christi procession strengthens Christians’ faith by encouraging them to live out their beliefs publicly.

“Many people profess their faith, but they do not always live it. Today’s procession was a manifestation of our faith and courage as Christians,” he said.

He also urged Christians to extend support to the less fortunate in society, drawing inspiration from Christ’s example of sharing with others.
