The Murang’a County Government has stepped up efforts to improve road infrastructure in urban centres, with Governor Irungu Kang’ata launching the PCEA-Kayole Smart City Project in Murang’a Town.
The project, which includes an extensive network of newly tarmacked roads, is expected to ease movement within the town, improve connectivity and open up previously less accessible areas for economic development.
Governor Kang’ata said improved urban roads were critical to the growth of Murang’a Town noting that better connectivity would make it easier for residents, traders and visitors to move around the town while creating opportunities for businesses to expand.
As part of the project, one of the roads has been named Charles Rubia Road in honour of the late veteran freedom fighter and politician Charles Rubia, who played a significant role in Kenya’s struggle for the restoration of multiparty democracy.
Kang’ata said naming the road after Rubia was a way of recognizing the contribution of historical figures whose efforts helped shape the country’s democratic journey.
He said the county government was keen to ensure that development projects not only address current infrastructure needs but also preserve and celebrate Murang’a’s rich history and the contribution of its sons and daughters to national development.
The improved road provides an alternative route through Murang’a Town, helping to ease traffic pressure on major roads while shortening journeys to various parts of the urban centre.
The county government expects the enhanced road network to stimulate business activity by improving access to shops, markets and other commercial establishments.
Traders and customers are also expected to benefit from easier movement, while improved accessibility could encourage new investments along the upgraded corridor.
Kang’ata observed that the Smart City initiative was part of the county’s broader strategy to modernize urban centres through improved infrastructure, better planning and investments that respond to the changing needs of a growing population.
The launch also provided an opportunity for young people to showcase their talents through skating and dancing competitions.
Winners of the competitions received cash prizes, with Kang’ata saying the county would continue supporting initiatives that give young people platforms to identify, nurture and develop their talents.
He stated that the county’s development agenda was not limited to physical infrastructure but also included creating opportunities for young people, supporting businesses and improving the general quality of life for residents.
The governor said the county government would continue implementing projects that respond directly to residents’ needs while promoting economic growth and making Murang’a urban centres more accessible, attractive and investment-friendly.
The PCEA-Kayole road project is expected to contribute to the ongoing transformation of Murang’a Town as the county seeks to improve urban infrastructure and position its towns as centres of trade, services and investment.
