Property of unknown value was last evening destroyed when fire razed five houses at Witemere area in Nyeri town rendering five families homeless.
According to neigbours, two girls were warming tea when the gas cylinder they were using exploded spreading fire in the room before spreading to other houses.
One neighbour said “there were worn out tires stored in one of the rooms that got fire and made it fierce.”
The Nyeri fire brigade arrived in time to put out the fire but nothing was salvaged from the houses.
The landlord Mr. Peter Munyari told KNA that a girl lit the gas to warm tea and left the room.
“On return she found that a curtain had caught the flames that spread quickly to the other rooms.”
No one was injured during the incident and police at the scene said investigations will commence to establish the cause of the fire.
