At least four people have been confirmed dead following a horrific road accident near the Ololunga–Katakala bridge along the Narok–Bomet highway that involved a lorry transporting traders and a car.
The midnight accident also left several people with serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment in various health facilities within Narok County.
Confirming the incident, Narok County Police Commander Patrick Lobolia described the accident as devastating.
He explained that a Narok-bound Mitsubishi FH lorry veered off its lane before colliding head-on with an oncoming car.
The lorry, he added, was reportedly carrying traders from a nearby market at the time of the crash.
He said it was not clear whether those who perished were in the car or not, as by the time police arrived at the scene, the bodies had been removed to Narok County Referral Hospital mortuary alongside the injured, who were rushed to various hospitals.
Police have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident that has once again cast a spotlight on rising road fatalities in Narok County.
Lobolia urged motorists to exercise extra caution, especially during the ongoing rainy season, emphasizing the importance of ensuring vehicles are in good mechanical condition to safely navigate slippery roads.
The incident comes barely a week after another crash at Nairega along the Mai Mahiu–Narok highway which claimed seven lives.
During that accident, a van collided head-on with a lorry and all seven passengers in the van perished.
Authorities continue to appeal for vigilance among road users as concerns mount over the increasing number of deadly accidents on major highways in the region.
