The national government has begun the redevelopment of Moi Stadium in Kisumu into a modern 10,000-seater sports facility.
The project is expected to boost youth talent development, create jobs and position the lakeside city as a regional sports tourism hub.
Defence Cabinet Secretary (CS), Soipan Tuya, who presided over the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday said the project underscores the government’s commitment to modernising sports infrastructure across the country as a pillar of youth empowerment and economic growth.
Once completed, she said, the stadium will feature roofed pavilions on all four sides, a football pitch built to FIFA and CAF standards, and an eight-lane athletics track field with a tartan finish compliant with World Athletics standards.
She added that the facility will also include modern mechanical, electrical and civil works, perimeter fencing and adequate parking.
“This facility will serve as a vital hub for sports development, providing a platform for young athletes to identify, nurture and showcase their talents while competing at national, regional and international levels,” Tuya said.
She noted that beyond sports, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities, stimulate local economic activities and strengthen social cohesion within the community.
The CS also lauded the Ministry of Defence for leading the construction works and ensuring high standards service delivery, while acknowledging the collaboration with the Kisumu County Government.
Kisumu Governor, Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, described the redevelopment of Moi Stadium as more than a construction project, saying it marks the beginning of a wider economic and cultural transformation for Kisumu County.
“Since its construction, Moi Stadium has been the cradle of legends and a home of dreams for many. As we break ground today, we are expanding that dream,” Prof. Nyong’o said, citing the stadium’s role in producing renowned footballers such as former Gor Mahia star Peter Dawo.
The governor revealed that the stadium redevelopment is part of a broader vision to create a sports-led economic ecosystem, which will eventually include a shopping mall, eateries, amphitheaters, art galleries, a sports museum and housing units for athletes.
He said the project is the product of sustained international engagement aimed at securing financing for local-level infrastructure, arguing that local governments are emerging as key drivers of development across Africa.
Prof. Nyong’o also thanked President William Ruto for prioritizing sports infrastructure and for backing Kisumu’s growing continental profile, noting that Nairobi’s designation as the regional office for United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA) had elevated Kenya’s diplomatic standing.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials from UCLGA, Members of the County Assembly and county executives, underscoring Kisumu’s growing role in regional and continental affairs.
Both leaders urged stakeholders to remain united to ensure the project is completed on time and delivers lasting benefits to current and future generations.
