Government commits to complete affordable housing programmes

The Government has renewed its commitment to delivering the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) and other critical infrastructure projects, noting that implementation is progressing well across the country.

Speaking on Wednesday during a tour of key development projects in Nairobi, Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, Felix Koskei, said that the government is committed to providing continuous and adequate resources towards the completion of key projects being undertaken across the county.

Koskei underscored the need for completion of the projects already underway, insisting that President William Ruto is keen on ensuring progressive development that will steer the country toward achieving the developed nation status.

Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga said the government remains focused on ensuring that Kenyans have access to decent, affordable housing while creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.

The inspection tour brought together more than 45 principal secretaries who visited the City Cotton Area, Kamukunji Park, and the Starehe Affordable Housing Project to assess the progress of ongoing government projects.

Hinga urged Kenyans to take advantage of the housing units that are now available across the country.

“The Affordable Housing Programme is progressing well, and housing units are now available across counties in Kenya. I encourage all eligible Kenyans to apply through the Boma Yangu platform and secure an opportunity to own a decent and affordable home. This programme is transforming lives while creating jobs and driving economic growth,” said Hinga.

He emphasized that the government remains committed to accelerating housing delivery under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), while ensuring quality, affordability, and transparency in housing allocation.

The visit also highlighted progress in complementary infrastructure, including trunk sewer systems, river training works, non-motorised transport facilities, and community amenities such as sports facilities, parks, and an amphitheater at Kamukunji, all aimed at creating integrated, livable urban communities.

Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said that under the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, remarkable progress has been made in upgrading the sewerage system serving Lucky Summer and Baba Dogo in Ruaraka Constituency.

He disclosed that the project is delivering 27-kilometer trunk sewer lines along the Nairobi River corridor, creating an interceptor system that diverts wastewater away from the river and surrounding neighborhoods.

“With a treatment capacity of 60 million litres per day, the upgraded network will help curb pollution, improve sanitation and protect the Nairobi River ecosystem,” said Omollo.

He added that the ClimateWorX Mtaani Initiative has provided employment opportunities to more than 45,000 youth and women engaged in river clean-up, drainage maintenance and environmental restoration, demonstrating the strong link between infrastructure development, environmental conservation and community empowerment.

“The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, through the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs), has played a key coordination role in supporting project implementation and mobilising communities under the ClimateWorX Mtaani Initiative,” said Omollo.

The government reiterated that the Affordable Housing Programme is being implemented in counties across Kenya and called on more Kenyans to register and apply for the available housing units.

The Affordable Housing Program (Boma Yangu) is a flagship initiative of the Government of Kenya aimed at increasing access to decent, quality, and affordable homes for all Kenyans.

Implemented under the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, the programme seeks to reduce the housing deficit, stimulate job creation, and promote inclusive, sustainable urban growth in line with Vision 2030 and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
