Tindiret Sub County has recorded a sharp rise in national identity card applications, with at least 55 applications processed weekly for those not previously registered (NPR), following the government’s waiver of charges late last year.
According to the Sub County Deputy Registration Officer (SCDRO), Henry Kisorio, the number is a significant increase from about 20 applicants per week before the waiver.
To reach more potential applicants, the office has in the past nine months conducted four mobile registration exercises, one at Ainakipng’etuny Secondary School, two at Tindiret Chief’s office, and another at Maraba trading centre in Meteitei location.
Kisorio said mobile registration would continue to be expanded to ensure services are accessible to residents in the far-flung parts of the expansive sub county.
However, he expressed concern over staff shortages at the Tindiret office, which currently operates with only four personnel, two technical officers and two support staff. He noted that at least four additional clerical officers are required for the office to function optimally.
The increased uptake of ID cards is expected to ease access to essential services and opportunities for residents, especially the youth.
