The government has spent Sh336 million to improve school infrastructure in 701 learning institutions in Narok County through the Kenya Primary Education Equity in Learning (KPEEL) Program.
Narok County Education Director Apollo Opuko said each institution received Sh480, 000 that was used to build classrooms and improve the learning environment of the young learners.
He called on parents to take advantage of the improved school infrastructure to educate their children saying research in the county shows that about 20, 000 school going children were out of school.
KPEEL aims at reducing regional disparities in learning outcomes, improvement of girls’ retention in upper primary and strengthening systems for delivering equitable education outcomes.
“Our main interest is to ensure our children get quality education in a favourable environment. Every parent should ensure that their children who are in the school-going age attend school without fail,” he said.
The education director reported that 46 schools in the county were under the school-feeding program where over 40, 000 learners are benefiting.
He commended education stakeholders in the county for working together to reduce cases of early marriages and teenage pregnancies saying girl pregnancy has reduced from 48 per cent in the year 2020 to the current 26 per cent.
“The transition to junior secondary in our county was 99 per cent and those who transitioned from secondary to tertiary institutions was 56 per cent. This is a commendable number and we now aim at achieving 100 per cent,” he said.
He further disclosed that in the financial year 2024/2025, the government disbursed to Narok county Sh95 million for Free Primary Education, Sh95 million to junior school and another Sh2.2 billion to secondary schools.
In the financial year 2024/2025, the county government of Narok disbursed Sh450 million as bursary to the needy and vulnerable children with an aim of ensuring that no child missed school.
