Government to launch firearms mop-up along Samburu-Baringo border

The government will soon launch a security operation targeting illegal firearms along the volatile border of Samburu and Baringo counties.

Speaking in Lolmolog village, Samburu West Sub-County, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the disarmament exercise in both counties is aimed at restoring lasting peace following a 20-year intercommunal conflict that has left a trail of death and poverty.

He noted that dialogue alone will not end the perennial banditry and cattle rustling along the Malaso belt as long as residents of both counties remain in possession of illegal firearms.

“I understand the frustration of residents of Samburu West, but we cannot disarm one community and leave the other. The same will apply in Isiolo and Laikipia counties until we achieve lasting peace. I urge residents to support this intelligence-led operation,” he said.

Murkomen added that more National Police Reservists will be deployed in the region to boost security. He said security roads will also be opened to ease police patrols.

At the same time, the CS warned security officers who reportedly supply bandits with food and ammunition that they will face stern legal action.

“I also caution businessmen who buy stolen livestock in urban areas and facilitate the continuation of banditry across the country. We will come for you through our intelligence-led operation,” he warned.

Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda said insecurity along the Malaso belt has displaced residents in 10 locations, forcing them to take refuge in nearby towns with police presence.

She further noted that Lolmolog area lacks mobile network coverage, making it difficult for residents to communicate and call for help during attacks.

The security meeting was also attended by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Samburu Governor Lati Lelelit, and Samburu North MP Eli Letipila.
