Government unveils Sh154 million NYOTA fund in Eastern region

‎The government has launched the second phase of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Business Support Programme in the Eastern region, rolling out Sh154 million to support youth entrepreneurs in Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi counties as part of efforts to tackle unemployment and stimulate economic growth.

Speaking during the regional launch at Kirubia Stadium in Chuka, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to empowering young people through entrepreneurship by providing financial support and equipping them with business skills.

‎Ruku said each beneficiary under the programme will receive Sh25,000 to start or expand a business after completing business development training aimed at enhancing enterprise management and sustainability.
‎”The government is committed to empowering young people economically by supporting entrepreneurship and creating an environment that allows businesses to grow. Peace and stability are also critical for the success of businesses,” said Ruku.

He said Sh81 million has been allocated to beneficiaries in Meru County, Sh41 million to Embu and Sh32 million to Tharaka-Nithi.
‎He urged beneficiaries to invest the funds prudently in sustainable enterprises that will improve their livelihoods and create employment opportunities for others.

Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa said the government’s Sh3.06 billion investment in the second phase of the NYOTA programme demonstrates its commitment to addressing youth unemployment through enterprise development.

‎He noted that the initiative will enable thousands of young people across the country to establish and expand businesses, thereby contributing to job creation and inclusive economic growth.

Principal Secretary for Fisheries and Blue Economy Betsy Njagi said beneficiaries have received not only financial support but also business development training to enhance their entrepreneurial and financial management skills.

She added that other government initiatives, including the Affordable Housing Programme, are creating additional employment opportunities for young people, complementing the gains expected from the NYOTA programme.

‎Under the programme, Meru County has 3,825 beneficiaries drawn from its 45 wards; Embu County has 1,700 beneficiaries from 20 wards, while Tharaka Nithi has 870 beneficiaries from its 15 wards.
