The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development under the Livestock Value Chain Support Project is set to deliver two state-of-the-art 1,000-litre capacity milk coolers to boost dairy farming in Muhoroni Sub-County, Kisumu County.
The Principal Secretary, State Department of Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, will preside over the handing over of the solar-powered bulk milk coolers at the Muhoroni stadium on Saturday, 23, May.
In a communiqué ahead of the delivery, the government reassured that the investment is designed to improve milk aggregation, reduce post-harvest losses, and safeguard farmer earnings through better preservation and quality management.
The two milk coolers will be handed over to the Kisumu Dairy Development Centre (KDDC) in Nyangore Location, Chemelil ward and the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) dairy unit in Tonde Location, Muhoroni/Koru ward in Muhoroni Constituency.
The intervention is expected to provide a major boost to smallholder dairy farmers in the area, where post-harvest losses and limited market access have for years hindered productivity and trapped farmers in low-income cycles.
Each of the coolers has a complete solar-powered cold chain ecosystem accompanied by accessories, including the tank, four solar panels, a 3 KVA inverter, and batteries.
It is designed to enable farmers to chill their milk immediately, even during fluctuations in grid power supply.
The model also guarantees quality, bulk handling, and better farm-gate prices for farmers.
