Small-scale traders in Kabete are set to benefit from the newly built 36 modern trading units constructed by Kiambu County through the Department of Trade and Industrialisation.
The County Executive Committee (CEC), Susan Kirimi, says the project is part of ongoing efforts to improve the business environment while supporting the growth of micro and small enterprises across the county.
The 36 modern trading units are fitted with essential amenities and are designed to provide traders with a safer and more dignified working environment.
The facilities are also expected to enhance the appearance of Kabete Town by replacing informal and congested trading spaces with a well-planned commercial centre.
According to Susan Kirimi, the initiative is aimed at attracting more customers and improving service delivery, believing that the infrastructure will enable entrepreneurs to operate more efficiently while increasing their daily incomes.
“Beyond benefiting individual traders, the project is expected to stimulate local economic development by creating an organised marketplace that supports commerce and attracts investment. Strengthening market infrastructure remains a key strategy in promoting sustainable economic growth, creating employment opportunities and improving livelihoods,” says Kirimi.
Allan Kimani, a local trader, lauds the county for the transformative project after years of pushing for modern units.
“As residents of Kabete, we are grateful to the government of Kiambu for considering the welfare of small-scale traders. These modern kiosks will help improve the trading environment, increase customer confidence, provide safer working grounds and contribute to the growth of the local economy,” Kimani adds.
The completion of the kiosks comes as the county continues to invest in projects that enhance trade and industrialisation across various sub-counties, including Gakoe and Mataara Market in Gatundu North, Karuri Market in Kiambaa, and Rironi Market in Lari sub-county.
Such investments are intended to strengthen local enterprises while supporting the county’s broader development agenda of improving public infrastructure and creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.
The kiosks are now awaiting official handover to traders by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi. Once operational, the facility is expected to usher in a new era of organised, safe and dignified trade in Kabete Town.
