Kakamega County Governor, Fernandes Barasa has assured that the County government will disburse Sh150 million in bursary funds this January, to support secondary school students from low-income families.
He made the announcement, Sunday, when he worshipped at the New Apostolic Church in Lubinu, Lusheya Ward, Mumias East Sub-county.
Barasa said the bursary plan was cleared after consultations with the Controller of Budget, after the County aligned its systems with recommendations from the Auditor-General.
According to the Governor, this will ensure that all funds are distributed transparently and reach the intended beneficiaries without misappropriation.
Governor Barasa explained that the County is committed to helping learners from vulnerable households remain in school, especially at a time when many parents are struggling with rising education costs.
He noted that the bursary will be released before schools re-open, to avoid last-minute disruptions for students.
Barasa emphasised that education remains a central pillar of his Administration’s development agenda, adding that investment in young people is essential for building a skilled and productive future workforce.
The Governor said the County has strengthened its bursary management structures, to ensure fairness and accountability during the allocation process.
“We want every child in Kakamega to have an equal chance to succeed. These bursaries will ease pressure on parents and help students focus on their studies,” he said.
Governor Barasa thanked the church for its role in guiding communities and promoting peace tolerance and unity, saying collaboration between government and religious institutions, is important for social development.
His visit was part of his regular engagements with residents to monitor progress and listen to community needs.
