Livestock owners urged to keep animals off highways

Narok Central Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC) Benson Pamba has urged livestock owners to keep their animals away from major roads to help prevent accidents along highways.

Pamba also called on motorists to observe traffic rules and remain vigilant, especially when driving through areas frequently used for livestock grazing and crossing.

The police commander spoke following an accident along the Narok–Suswa road near Enkare Restaurant where a lorry rammed into a herd of cattle, killing two cows and injuring four others.

According to Pamba, the Isuzu FRR lorry was being driven by Peter Too, who was travelling towards Suswa when he encountered the animals crossing the road.

“The animals suddenly crossed the highway, forcing the driver to swerve in an attempt to avoid them,” said Pamba.

However, despite efforts to avoid the collision, the vehicle knocked down several cattle, killing two on the spot while injuring four others. The driver escaped unhurt during the incident.

Police officers from Narok Central Police Station together with veterinary officers arrived at the scene shortly after the accident to assess the situation and begin investigations.

The officers recorded statements from eyewitnesses and the driver before examining the affected animals.

The carcasses of the two dead cattle were later taken to the livestock department for disposal while the injured animals received treatment before being handed back to their owner.

Traffic flow along the busy Narok–Suswa highway was temporarily disrupted as police officers supervised the clearing of the scene and restored normal movement of vehicles.

Speaking after the incident, Pamba commended members of the public for remaining calm and cooperating with police officers during the operation.

“I congratulate the public for not taking the law into their own hands and instead allowing the police to handle the matter. I urge them to continue maintaining the same spirit,” he said.

He added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
