A middle-aged man died on Thursday morning after jumping from the second floor of the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) mall in Kisumu.
Confirming the incident, Kisumu Central Sub County Police Commander Bakari Mwanauli said the deceased, identified as Hannington Raburu, parked his vehicle KCY 869 G (Landcruiser V8) and proceeded to the Kenya Revenue Authority Officer on 2nd floor.
He then threw himself down and died on the spot.
Officers from Obunga Police Station received information from a citizen and rushed to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the officers found the man lying in a pool of blood at the entrance of the KRA offices. They processed the scene before moving the body to Aga Khan Hospital mortuary,” he said.
Police officers, he said, were investigating the incident and will issue a comprehensive statement later.
“At the moment, I cannot be able to tell you what transpired because our team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations has taken up the matter,” he said.
The incident sent the entire mall which houses various government offices into panic.
It was not immediately clear what the deceased went to do at the KRA offices.
According to a statement issued by KRA, the man jumped from the second floor of the building, sustained serious injuries, and succumbed shortly afterward.
“KRA deeply regrets this incident and conveys heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” read part of the statement signed by the Commissioner for Shared Services.
The authority said the matter has been reported to relevant agencies, and investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
“KRA is fully cooperating with law enforcement officers to facilitate the ongoing investigations,” the statement added.
