Mariguiti Bridge boosts marketing of farm produce in Gatundu South

Farmers in Kiganjo Ward, Gatundu South Sub-county, are set to benefit from easy access to markets of their produce following the commissioning of the Mariguiti Bridge across the Kirangi River.

As of August 2026, the Mariguiti Bridge project has been under construction for approximately 26 months since its initial groundbreaking in July 2024.

The bridge links the Mariguiti and Gituamba ridges and is expected to improve the movement of residents while providing farmers with a more reliable route for transporting their produce, which includes milk, tea and other farm produce, to markets.

The facility was commissioned by Kiambu Governor, Dr. Kimani Wamatangi, who said the bridge would enhance connectivity between the two areas and facilitate the movement of agricultural produce.

County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads, Public Works and Utilities Eng. Newton Itobi and Chief Officer for Roads Julie Waweru are overseeing projects under the county’s Roads and Infrastructure portfolio.

The County government has announced plans to rehabilitate the connecting roads through the ‘Boresha Barabara’ Initiative and install solar-powered streetlights along the route.

The planned infrastructural improvements are expected to complement the Bridge by making the route more accessible and improving visibility for residents and other road users.

For farmers who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, better transport links, could reduce the difficulties associated with moving produce to markets and collection centers.

Ann Njeri, a farmer from the area, welcomed the commissioning, saying the Bridge would make movement easier for farmers and residents.

“We are happy to have the Bridge because it will make it easier for us to move our farm produce and travel between the two areas,’’ Njeri said.

“We hope the road will also be improved, so that we can fully benefit from the new connection,” she added.

The bridge is expected to strengthen the link between the two ridges and improve access to markets and other essential services.

The County government said the road rehabilitation and installation of solar streetlights would further enhance the benefits of the new transport link.

The commissioning of the Bridge marks a step towards improving rural transport infrastructure in the area and supporting the movement of agricultural goods and people.
