Residents of Mbale Town in Vihiga are set to benefit from a Sh21 million solar-powered street lighting project aimed at enhancing security, improving urban infrastructure and supporting economic activities within Vihiga Municipality.
The project, which is funded by the World Bank, is awaiting the completion of the tendering process before the implementation process begins.
Speaking to KNA, Vihiga Municipality Assistant Director for Corporate Services, Benjamin Muhando, said the project will be implemented by the municipality under the County Department of Lands, Housing, Urban Development and Physical Planning as part of efforts to improve service delivery and urban development.
Muhando noted that the municipality is mandated to provide services, including administration and waste management in Mbale, Chavakali, Mudete and Majengo towns, adding that street lighting is a critical component in promoting safety and enhancing service delivery.
He said the project is expected to complement ongoing initiatives aimed at improving urban management and creating a conducive environment for residents, investors and businesses.
According to Muhando, the tender for the project has already been advertised on the county government’s tender portal with the project expected to cost Sh21 million.
The planned works will cover several key streets in Mbale Town, including roads around Equity Bank, Absa Bank, North End Road, the Main Street and the road leading to St. Clare’s Maragoli Girls High School.
Muhando said the use of solar-powered lighting will promote energy efficiency while reducing electricity costs associated with conventional street lighting systems.
He added that the project will enhance security by improving visibility along major streets and public spaces at night, thereby creating a safer environment for residents and businesses.
The initiative aligns with the government’s Vision 2030 development agenda and efforts to support a 24-hour economy by enabling businesses to operate for longer hours under improved security conditions.
Muhando noted that implementation of the project will commence once the tender is awarded and the contractor moves to the site.
