The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has deployed monitors across areas conducting by-elections to monitor media coverage and ensure journalists operate within the set professional standards.
Speaking in Siakago Town in Mbeere North Constituency, Embu County, on Thursday, MCK Official Jackson Karanja urged journalists to strictly adhere to the Media Code of Conduct throughout the exercise.
He emphasized that responsible reporting remains key in safeguarding the credibility of the by-elections.
Karanja appealed to security agencies and election officials to grant journalists the space and time to render their constitutional mandate of informing the public.
“Access to information is a right and not a favor and so we expect authorities to allow journalists to do their work without interference,” he said.
He condemned reported incidents of intimidation of journalists in some areas.
Karanja said no one should threaten or obstruct journalists in their pursuit of gathering information for the public.
He reminded reporters covering the Mbeere North by-election to prioritise accuracy, balance, and fairness in all their stories.
He said the council was pleased with the professionalism displayed so far and encouraged them to maintain the standards until the end of the exercise.
