Learners at Bondo Nyironge Senior School in Migori County have received a major boost after a school bus promised by President William Ruto during his development tour of Suna West Constituency earlier this year was officially delivered to the institution.
The 51-seater bus was handed over to the school by Suna West Member of Parliament Peter Masara during a ceremony attended by students, parents, teachers, and local leaders at the institution.
Speaking during the handover event, Masara said the new bus would greatly improve mobility for learners participating in academic and co-curricular activities such as science symposiums, sports competitions, and educational tours.
The legislator noted that the bus marked the seventh school bus delivered to secondary schools in Suna West Constituency since 2017, adding that the initiative demonstrates continued efforts to improve education infrastructure in the region.
“The community around this school requested a bus during the President’s tour, and today the President has fulfilled his promise. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving education standards and supporting our learners,” said Masara.
He commended President Ruto for supporting development projects within Migori County and across the country, saying investments in schools play a critical role in improving academic performance and creating opportunities for learners.
Masara also praised ongoing reforms in the education sector under the current administration, particularly the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which he described as a practical and skills-oriented system capable of addressing gaps that existed in the previous education structure.
According to the MP, leaders and institutions should continue investing in educational infrastructure and learning resources to ensure successful implementation of CBC across the country.
However, the legislator expressed concern over low salaries paid to Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in some counties, noting that many qualified teachers still earn less than Sh10,000 per month despite their important role in nurturing learners.
He urged county governments and relevant institutions to adhere to labour laws and improve remuneration for ECDE teachers, arguing that poor pay undermines the teaching profession and affects morale among educators.
Bondo Nyironge Senior School Principal Mildred Otieno welcomed the delivery of the bus, saying it would significantly reduce the costs previously incurred while hiring transport for students attending competitions and educational activities outside the school.
“We have been spending a lot of money hiring buses to transport learners for sports and science competitions. This bus will help us redirect those funds to other educational programmes within the school,” she said.
Otieno noted that the bus would also boost the confidence of learners, teachers, and the surrounding community by improving accessibility and enhancing participation in co-curricular activities.
The principal further commended MP Masara for supporting development projects within schools across the constituency without discrimination.
“Apart from this bus, the Member of Parliament has also supported the construction of important infrastructure in our school, including a modern laboratory and a new administration block,” she added.
Meanwhile, Masara reaffirmed his support for President Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid, pledging to mobilize residents of Suna West to support the Head of State.
Speaking elsewhere within the constituency, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator said the party remains open to working with like-minded leaders to form broader political alliances aimed at promoting national unity and development.
He added that such collaborations would also help preserve the political legacy of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whom he described as a champion of democracy and national unity.
