As the 2027 General Election draws closer, Mombasa County Commissioner (CC), Mohamed Nur, has warned politicians against using goons and youths to disrupt opponents’ meetings or masquerade as security personnel during political activities.
Speaking during the Madaraka Day celebrations at the Bilima Grounds in Kisauni Sub-County, held amid heavy rains, Nur said security agencies would not hesitate to arrest anyone who breaks the law, regardless of their social status or political affiliation.
He urged politicians to seek police protection whenever necessary, instead of relying on hired goons.
“We will provide adequate security for anyone holding a meeting. We do not want divisive, inciteful, or ethnically profiled politics. I am happy that Mombasa remains peaceful.”
The CC called for closer collaboration between the public and security agencies to enhance security through information sharing.
Nur also urged residents to register under the Boma Yangu programme, to benefit from Affordable Housing projects being implemented by the government. He noted that the government has invested Sh31 billion in housing, markets, and hostels.
The latest housing project to be launched is the Makupa Modern Mixed Urban Development and associated infrastructure project in Mvita Sub-County, valued at Sh685 million. The project includes the redevelopment of the historic 106-year-old Majengo Market.
Another major development is the Sh7 billion Nyali Affordable Housing Project, which is rapidly taking shape and is currently 50 percent complete. A total of 2,000 housing units are under construction and are expected to be ready within the next 18 months.
“We are proud and grateful that the government has not left Mombasa behind,” said Nur.
The CC also highlighted the ongoing construction of the Sh7.5 billion Nyali Bridge-Mtwapa Bridge Road project.
The project commenced in November 2022, is currently 56 percent complete, and is expected to be finished in August 2027.
The scope of works includes the construction of a four-lane dual carriageway, service roads, six grade-separated junctions, six footbridges, and facilities for non-motorised transport from Nyali Bridge to the start of Mtwapa Bridge.
On land matters, the Administrator allayed fears of evictions, noting that the government has directed that no squatters should be removed from occupied land.
Last week, the Head of State issued 33,000 title deeds during his week-long tour of the Coast region. Negotiations are ongoing with landowners whose property is occupied by squatters, with the government seeking to purchase the land.
The Government has also pledged to issue 200,000 title deeds within the next three months under the National Titling Programme to address historical land injustices in the Coast region.
“No one will be evicted from their land. We have that directive. Absentee landowners should engage the State,” said Nur.
Meanwhile, Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba praised the County Security and Intelligence Committee for improving security in Kisauni, an area that had previously been synonymous with machete-wielding juvenile gangs that terrorised residents.
Bedzimba also assured residents that no one would be evicted from their homes.
