Residents of Mwea East and West sub-counties, Kirinyaga County, can now access government services closer to home, following the operationalization of the new Mwea Huduma Centre in the area.
The newly opened facility, which becomes the 61st Huduma Centre in Kenya and the second in Kirinyaga County, is expected to significantly improve access to public services for thousands of residents in the populous Mwea region and the neighboring communities.
The commencement of operations marks a major milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to decentralize public services and enhance convenience, efficiency and accessibility for citizens seeking essential government services.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Mwea East Deputy County Commissioner Fred Ayieko, who represented the Kirinyaga County Commissioner, Shufaa Mwijuma, emphasized the importance of providing quality and respectful services to all citizens, particularly senior citizens of society.
Ayieko reminded staff members and security officers that elderly citizens deserve to be served with dignity, courtesy, and integrity whenever they visit government offices.
“Senior citizens are a special group in the society and should always be treated with utmost respect and compassion. Every interaction with them should reflect integrity, patience, and professionalism,” he said.
His remarks set the tone for the new center’s operations, underscoring the values of service, empathy, and accountability that define the Huduma Kenya services.
Representatives from the Huduma Secretariat, Japheth Muthuma, Beatrice Chelangat, and Albert Parmeres, also addressed the staff and other stakeholders during the operationalization exercise.
The officials outlined the mandate of the Huduma Secretariat, under the Ministry of Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes, while emphasizing the critical role the Secretariat plays in ensuring efficient service delivery across the country.
They reminded staff members that they serve as ambassadors of the Huduma brand and are expected to uphold the values of integrity, transparency, efficiency, and courtesy while serving citizens.
The opening of the Mwea Huduma Centre is expected to ease the burden on residents who previously had to travel to Kerugoya to access government services.
The centre will provide a wide range of essential services from various government ministries, departments and agencies under one roof, thus saving citizens time and reducing the cost of accessing services.
Meanwhile, even as the center commenced operations, preparations were underway for its official launch, which is expected to further showcase the government’s commitment to improving service delivery and strengthening citizen engagement.
