Police in Vihiga have impounded Chang’aa worth Sh1.2 million in Sabatia sub county since the onset of the 100 days Rapid Result Initiative (RRI) on the crackdown of illicit brew, drug and substance abuse and rising organized gangs.
Speaking to the press in his office on Thursday, DCC Sabatia, Festus Munyao confirmed that from Saturday todate, they have netted 409 litres of chang’aa whose street value is Sh3,000 per litre amounting to Sh1.2 million in total value.
Munyao said they have also nabbed nine rolls of bhang and 11 suspects have been arrested and arraigned at Hamisi law courts, where one suspect who was found with 17 litres of chang’aa was slapped with a fine of Sh50,000.
He said that residents of Sabatia sub county import chang’aa from Ikolomani and Shinyalu in Kakamega County then they sell it to the locals.
He called on residents who are engaging in the sale of illicit brew and bhang to look for alternative business that is legitimate and contribute to the development of the community.
He confirmed that apart from the few cases of illicit brew and bhang Sabatia sub county is generally calm and there are no insecurity incidents compared to other parts of Vihiga county.
“The main economic activities in this area tea and banana cultivation and mining of gold which is keeping residents busy and contributing to development,” said Munyao.
He cautioned parents against using their children to work in the gold mines instead advising them to ensure all children are taken to school as education is the best legacy they can leave for their children.
He commended education stakeholders for the stellar performance saying when it comes to education Sabatia Sub County has good schools and which have sterling performance in national examinations.
