Ruiru Stadium upgrade, which officially began 12 days ago under Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s administration in Kiambu County, is progressing steadily.
A management team, led by County Youth Affairs, Sports, and Communication Executive (CECM) Osman Korar and Chief Officer for Sports Godfrey Masolo, visited the site Wednesday to inspect ongoing works.
The contractor is currently constructing the drainage system and perimeter fencing. Upon completion of this phase, ground compaction will follow, paving the way for installation of a new astroturf surface that will greatly enhance the pitch quality and usability.
The team also discussed the relocation of spectator stands from Thika Stadium to Ruiru Stadium, with final decisions expected by the end of the week. These stands will form part of the structured terraces planned for the facility.
In attendance were Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for Ruiru Biashara Ward, Kimani Nduta; Director of Sports, Dorcas Muthoni; Sports Commissioner, Chege Gitangu; representatives from the Department of Public Works and the project contractor.
The project will transform Ruiru Stadium into a modern sporting venue featuring an improved drainage system, spectator stands, additional training fields, and volleyball and basketball courts.
Frequent user and local footballer Wycliffe Gichira welcomed the new development but called for adherence to quality.
“I urge the contractors to strictly adhere to the highest standards so that we can have a facility that truly serves the youth,” Gichira said.
The renovation forms part of the county government’s broader efforts to upgrade sports infrastructure across Kiambu County.
Officials aim to deliver a better playing surface, enhanced spectator facilities, and a welcoming environment for athletes, fans, and the community.
Additional training fields and multi-purpose courts are expected to nurture young talent in various sports while promoting community engagement through regular events and competitions.
The upgrade will provide improved training conditions, especially during rainy seasons, thanks to the modern drainage system.
Once complete, the stadium is set to become a vibrant hub for sports development, talent discovery and social cohesion in Ruiru municipality.
County officials assured residents that works are proceeding efficiently with strict adherence to quality and safety standards.
The project underscores governor Wamatangi’s commitment to empowering the youth through world-class sports facilities.
