Sharp divisions have emerged ahead of the annual Chenda Chenda celebrations scheduled for today, Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
A section of Mijikenda elders has condemned what they term the politicization of the fete, which is held every September 9 to honour Mijikenda heroes and heroines and to celebrate the community’s cultural and traditional values.
This year, two separate events have been organized: one at Kaya Kauma in Kauma Sub-County led by a group of Mijikenda elders, and another at Pwani University in Kilifi town spearheaded by the Kilifi County Government’s Department of Culture.
Kaya elders, led by Mr. Tsuma Nzai, coordinator of the Mijikenda Kaya Elders Association, and Mr. Stan Kiraga, a founder member of the Malindi District Cultural Association (MADCA), have strongly criticized the politicization of the event.
They accused politicians—particularly senior county officials—of hijacking the event for political and financial expediency at the expense of genuine cultural enthusiasts.
Speaking at the Magarini Cultural Centre, Mr. Nzai urged politicians to keep off the celebrations and instead respect the traditions and culture of the Mijikenda.
Mr. Kiraga lamented that MADCA had been sidelined in the preparations, noting that the association has consistently commemorated the Mekatilili wa Menza Festival every August, an event recognized in the County Integrated Development Plan but which receives no funding.
“All in all, whether they are doing it genuinely or for political and financial gain, we are happy that the culture and traditions of the Mijikenda are being popularized through the event,” he said.
It was not immediately possible to get a comment from the County Department of Culture.
