Six people died on the spot and 41 others were injured following a tragic road accident involving a bus and two trucks on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in the Kapiti area of Kalama sub county in Machakos.
According to Kalama OCPD Patrick Gatiriria, the accident occurred early Tuesday morning, when the bus, belonging to Tahmeed company travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa collided head-on with two trucks coming from the opposite direction.
Gatirira, who spoke to the media at the scene of the accident, said 6 people died on the spot, a few had minor injuries while others were severely injured and investigations have begun to establish the cause of the crash.
“The scene was attended to immediately, the injured were rushed to Machakos Hospital and the bodies were moved to Machakos Level 5 mortuary,” Gatirira said.
Machakos County Health CECM Justus Kasivu noted that multiple ambulances had been immediately mobilized to transport casualties from the accident scene. Additionally, medical personnel who were on leave or off duty were recalled to assist in treating the victims.
“We are working with relevant agencies to support the families during this difficult time as families of the victims started arriving at the hospital to dentify their loved ones,” Kasivu said.
Machakos Level 5 Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Daniel Katua said the facility received 41 casualties from the Kalama Kapiti crash who are still receiving treatment.
“Among those admitted is a child who lost his mother in the accident. Our medical teams are attending to the injured as some are in critical condition,” Dr. Katua said.
Traffic on the congested highway experienced significant delays for multiple hours as emergency operations removed the wreckage.
Authorities have advised motorists to exercise heightened caution, pending the outcome of ongoing investigations into the incident.
