Tullow and KCB Foundation Scholarships

Turkana, Friday, February 2, 2018 KNA

Tullow and Kenya Commercial Bank foundation on Thursday sponsored 20 students from Turkana County to undertake mechanical engineering course at a vocational training institute in Nairobi.

Turkana County Deputy Governor Peter Lotethiro flagged off a van carrying the lucky students in an event held at the Tullow Oil Lodwar offices.

The students, comprising of two girls and 18 boys drawn from the seven sub-counties in Turkana, were headed to Nairobi for a full scholarship training in Mechanical and Electrical engineering course at St. Kitizo Vocational Training Institute.

“The two-years course will involve a year of course work and another year of external attachment with the British oil exploration and production company Tullow Oil Company,” said the deputy governor.

The County Vocational Training Department, under the Ministry of Education, Sports and Social Protection, assisted Tullow Oil and KCB Foundation in the critical selection process.

The selection process focused on students who recently completed their high school and had interest in the area of trade.

The Deputy Governor encouraged the 20 students to work hard and focus on their education.

“To excel, you (students) should work hard and be disciplined. You should be good ambassadors to paint good image about Turkana,” he advised the beneficiaries of the sponsorship.

He observed that more organisations were coming together in partnership with the County Government to boost education and asked the partners to expand their focus to other areas like tourism, plumbing and design among others besides engineering.

An additional 120 students will be sponsored by the same foundation with school fees to attend the Lodwar Vocational Training Centre (LVTC). This is a 50 percent increase in the number of students sponsored last year

Those in attendance included the CEC of Education Patrick Losike, KCB Lodwar Branch Manager Christine Lare, Bethewel Sang’ Field Manager of Tullow Oil and Fr. Paul Areman Caritas Lodwar Deputy Director.
