Uasin Gishu County has reaffirmed its commitment to making energy the new driver of social and economic transformation.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor during the Mashujaa Day 2025 celebrations themed “Transforming Lives through Sustainable Energy Solutions”, Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea highlighted ongoing energy programs aimed at improving livelihoods across the county.
Kapkea said the County Government, in collaboration with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), is implementing the Stima Mashinani and Transformer Maximization Program, which has already connected more than 900 households across all six sub-counties, including Lelmokwo in Kesses, Siliboi in Ainabkoi, Mobet in Soy, Kapchemaget in Turbo, Kabiyet in Moiben, and Koshin Kaptien in Kapseret.
He noted that the second phase of the project is underway, targeting more homes, schools, and enterprises to ensure no household remains in darkness.
“From lighting our villages to powering industries, energy is the heartbeat of development, and Uasin Gishu is leading that charge,” he emphasized.
Over the past three years, the county has installed more than 3,500 new streetlights across estates, markets, and villages, significantly improving security, extending business hours, and empowering youth and women traders to work confidently at night.
The Deputy Governor said the county aims to raise electricity connectivity from the current 65 percent to 95 percent by 2030 to spur economic growth, promote entrepreneurship, and expand digital job opportunities.
Kapkea further revealed that the county is championing green energy adoption. The county headquarters now runs on a solar-powered system, with plans to solarize sub-county offices and security lights, demonstrating a strong commitment to clean, renewable energy.
Additionally, Uasin Gishu is finalizing plans for the Eldoret City Solar Street Lighting Project, a Sh3 billion Public-Private Partnership (PPP) expected to achieve 98 percent lighting coverage in the city. The smart system will integrate CCTV cameras with facial recognition, smart LED lights, and free public Wi-Fi, positioning Eldoret as one of Kenya’s first smart green cities, safe, connected, and vibrant around the clock.
