Uasin Gishu livestock farmers to benefit from free livestock vaccination

The County government of Uasin Gishu plans to carry out free livestock vaccination against East Coast Fever (ECF) across the county.

Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project, (KCSAP) Coordinator Cosma Langat said they received Sh30 million grant from World Bank and the county government allocated another Sh6 million towards the vaccination exercise targeting 30,000 cattle for vaccination against ECF.

Langat said the vaccination will be carried out by the County Department of Livestock to prevent East Coast Fever that is the cause of 80% of deaths of livestock in the county.

“Kenya Agriculture and Livestock Organization (KALRO) has trained 25 veterinarians who will be assigned to 150 identified crushers where the livestock will be vaccinated,” said Langat adding that the exercise that is expected to start next month will take 30 days.

Langat said the current vaccination will use new technology and it will be the first time and it is being rolled out on a massive scale. “We are promoting this vaccination as it will free the county from ECF,” said the coordinator.

“The ultimate goal is to prevent livestock deaths and help farmers save money as vaccinating animals against ECF is expensive,” he added.
