The Vihiga County Government has disbursed Sh4 million to nine sports teams under the 2025/2026 financial year sports fund in a move aimed at strengthening sports development and nurturing local talent across the county.
Speaking during the commissioning of the funds at the Vihiga County Headquarters on behalf of Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo, Deputy Governor Wilberforce Kitiezo said the allocation demonstrates the county’s continued commitment to supporting sports development despite prevailing financial constraints.
The beneficiaries include Vihiga United, Vihiga Queens, Luanda Villa, and Madira Soccer Assassins, each receiving Sh700,000. Vihiga Granite Rugby Club, Mbale AFC, and Vihiga Volleyball Club each received Sh275,000, while Vihiga Women Maragoli Club was allocated Sh100,000 and Vihiga Women Volleyball Team Sh275,000.
Kitiezo thanked representatives of the beneficiary teams for their patience and understanding, noting that the county remains committed to strengthening partnerships with sports stakeholders.
He also acknowledged financial challenges faced by some clubs, particularly Vihiga United, and apologised for delays in disbursement experienced in the previous financial year.
“I sincerely apologise to the teams, especially Vihiga United, for the financial difficulties experienced due to delayed funding. We are committed to improving the situation going forward,” he said.
The Deputy Governor called for increased support from corporate organisations and development partners to complement county funding, noting that sports have the potential to create employment opportunities, nurture talent and promote Vihiga County nationally and internationally.
He further commended Governor Ottichilo and other leaders for initiating the construction of Kidundu Stadium, saying the facility will provide a modern venue for training and hosting sporting activities once completed.
Vihiga County Assembly Sports Committee Chairperson Edwin Kutai urged sports clubs to diversify their income sources instead of relying solely on county allocations. He also encouraged teams to fully utilize existing sports facilities while maintaining proper financial records and accountability.
Chief Officer for Youth and Sports Sylvester Kane noted that sports continue to play a major role in promoting the county’s visibility through successful clubs such as Vihiga United and Vihiga Queens.
He said Vihiga remains among the few devolved units with a dedicated sports fund, attributing the achievement to the leadership of Governor Ottichilo.
Kane explained that delays in disbursement were caused by late transfers from the national government, expressing optimism that future allocations would be released on time to allow teams to prepare adequately for league competitions.
He urged all beneficiary teams to utilise the funds prudently and ensure proper accountability through timely reporting.
County Executive Committee Member for Gender, Culture, Youth, Sports and Social Services Ruth Agesa assured stakeholders that the ongoing construction of Kidundu Stadium is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
She thanked the sports teams for their patience during previous delays and expressed hope that future funding cycles will be smoother, enabling better preparation for sporting calendars.
