Vihiga partners with rights groups to advance civic education

The County Government of Vihiga is set to strengthen collaboration with human rights and civic education organizations to promote social justice.

The move comes after a consultative meeting between Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo and representatives from the Defenders of Human Rights (DHR) and Civic Education Group (CEG).

The team, led by Vincent Mahasi, paid a courtesy call on the Governor at the County Headquarters in Mbale, where they discussed opportunities for partnership in promoting human rights, civic education and community empowerment initiatives across the county.

During the meeting, the delegation presented a County Leadership Introduction and Partnership Formulation document developed under the theme, “Mapping Gaps and Opportunities for Collaboration in Human Rights, Civic Education and Advocacy.”

The document outlines key areas where stakeholders can work together to address governance, human rights and civic participation challenges affecting local communities.

Speaking during the engagement, Ottichilo commended the organizations for developing a comprehensive and resourceful document that highlights critical issues impacting residents and provides practical avenues for collaboration.

The Governor emphasized the need to uphold and protect human rights in all sectors of society, noting that respect for human rights remains fundamental to sustainable development, social justice and good governance.

He further expressed the County Government’s commitment to working closely with the organizations, particularly in advancing civic education programmes aimed at enhancing public awareness, citizen participation and accountability in governance processes.

On his part, Mahasi said the initiative seeks to foster stronger partnerships between county leadership and civil society organizations in addressing community concerns through advocacy, civic engagement and human rights promotion.

He noted that collaboration between government institutions and civil society actors is essential in identifying existing gaps and developing sustainable solutions that contribute to improved service delivery and the overall well-being of residents.

The meeting marked a significant step towards building strategic partnerships that will enhance civic participation, strengthen human rights protection mechanisms and promote inclusive development in the area.
