The County Government of Vihiga has commenced installation of solar-powered high-mast floodlights across the county as part of efforts to promote renewable energy, enhance public safety, and reduce energy costs.
The project is being implemented through a Memorandum of Understanding signed on April 9, 2025, between the County Government of Vihiga and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).
Speaking during the official launch, Director in charge of Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources Aquila Lwanga said the solar floodlight initiative was the first flagship project under the partnership.
Lwanga, who led the Technical Implementation Committee comprising county engineers, said the team had engaged market committee leaders in areas earmarked for the project.
“The Steering Committee approved the installation of solar-powered high-mast floodlights across the county. We have completed dismantling and demobilisation works for 12 existing grid-powered masts and are now preparing for installation of new solar systems,” she said.
According to Lwanga, the project involves converting 12 existing 30-meter grid-powered high masts to solar-powered systems and installing four additional solar-powered high masts across the county.
She said fabrication of the solar-powered systems was ongoing, while anchor bolts for the new masts had already been imported.
Construction of foundations for the new masts is expected to begin once the contractor completes the necessary preparations, with the entire project scheduled for completion in September 2026.
Lwanga said the solar floodlights would reduce electricity costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and provide reliable public lighting even during power outages.
“Better-lit public spaces will improve security, support businesses operating in the evening and enhance the quality of life for residents,” she said.
She reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to expanding investments in renewable energy and urged institutions, businesses, and households to embrace clean energy technologies.
“Every investment in renewable energy contributes to a healthier environment, improved energy security, and sustainable economic development. Together, we are building a future powered by clean, reliable, and affordable energy for the people of Vihiga,” Lwanga said.
The county technical team continues to monitor and supervise implementation to ensure that all works comply with approved designs, technical specifications, and government standards.
On behalf of Governor Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo, Lwanga appreciated market committees for their cooperation in facilitating the smooth implementation of the project.
