Companies showcase fire safety skills in Eldoret

Various companies from across the country convened in Eldoret for a fire safety challenge aimed at demonstrating workplace emergency preparedness and enhancing firefighting skills ahead of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

The event, held on Saturday, brought together 24 teams that competed in both practical and theoretical firefighting exercises, highlighting the growing emphasis on occupational safety and health across different sectors.

Speaking during the event, Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSHS) Deputy Director Justus Nyakego said the competition forms part of a series of activities lined up to mark the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which will be commemorated on April 28.

Nyakego noted that the challenge provided an opportunity for participants to showcase their competence in handling fire-related emergencies, reflecting increased awareness and improved preparedness in workplaces.

“The level of participation and skill demonstrated here is encouraging and shows that organisations are taking safety issues seriously,” he said.

Uasin Gishu County Director of Occupational Safety and Health Services Eric Guya emphasized the importance of such initiatives in strengthening safety standards and reducing workplace accidents.

He added that this year’s national celebrations, which will be hosted in Eldoret for the first time in the North Rift region, mark a significant milestone in promoting occupational safety awareness beyond major urban centers.

The main event is scheduled to take place at Central Primary School, where winning teams from both the fire safety and first aid challenges will be recognised and awarded. The celebrations are expected to attract key stakeholders, including government officials, industry players and members of the public.

Guya observed that the level of skill and coordination displayed during this year’s challenge indicates notable progress compared to previous editions, underscoring the impact of continuous training and awareness campaigns.
