Stakeholders in Mbale Town have expressed strong support for a proposed solar street lighting project under the Kenya Urban Support Program Phase II (KUSP II).
The residents were speaking during an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) public participation forum held at Mbale Friends Church.
The Forum, which is a key requirement in the EIA process, brought together residents, traders, and local officials, to provide opinions before the implementation of the project.
The initiative aims to enhance security, improve mobility, and boost business activity through the installation of solar-powered street lights across Mbale Town.
The Vihiga Municipality Municipal Manager, Paul Ayodi, said the project will promote the adoption of clean energy, while significantly reducing electricity costs associated with conventional street lighting.
He added that the initiative aligns with national priorities on sustainable urban development and climate-friendly infrastructure.
Participants welcomed the proposal, noting that improved lighting, would help curb insecurity in trading centres and residential areas.
Business owners observed that better illumination could extend business hours and stimulate local economic growth. However, stakeholders also called for proper maintenance of the solar infrastructure, transparency in procurement processes, and prioritization of employment opportunities for local youth.
Municipal Environment Officer, John Okwaro and Energy Officer, Roy Kinambuga, who are conducting the assessment, assured residents that environmental and social safeguards will be integrated to mitigate any potential impacts during installation and operation of the project.
The views collected during the Forum will be consolidated into the final EIA Report, which will inform approval and eventual implementation of the project.
