Agricultural exposition in Shaviringa aims to improve agriculture in Vihiga

Vihiga county, in partnership with Remmington Africa, hosted an agricultural exposition at Shaviringa grounds today, across all the six sub-counties to create awareness and educate farmers on how to practice productive agriculture and agri-business.

The County government, through the Sub County Crop Officers, livestock officers and Ward Agricultural officers mobilized 1, 500 farmers towards the event and their main aim was to educate farmers on how to practice Agro-Ecology Policy.

The Agro-Ecology Policy aims at educating farmers on how to practice agriculture while conserving the environment by using green energy.

The exposition was meant to boost agriculturally based economy and to create exposure to stakeholders and shareholders in Agri business.

Tony Anduvate, the County Crops Officer and the coordinator of Food Agricultural Organization said that the exhibitions were very important to the local farmers and that the county is looking forward to farmers implementing whatever they have learnt to produce more and practice Agri business to boost the county’s economy.

The Project officer, Amos Maina, working with Practical Action Project said that the project supports agriculture among the youth using digital technology while improving soil quality.

A farmer from Kevogi, Winnie Chepkemoi said that she came with high expectations to learn and her expectations have been met through the various sessions she attended.

The Chairperson of Watershed Management Committee said that he gained more knowledge on how to add value to his produce and how to practice smart irrigation using solar energy through the exhibitions.

The Chief Officer, Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Dr. Betty Mulianga, said that the exposition in partnership with other stakeholders will create awareness and help boost Agri business in Vihiga county.

A youth practicing agriculture, Oliver Aswani, working with the Practical Action Project encouraged his fellow youths to get into agriculture to learn and also earn from it.

Another youth working with Practical Action, Mildred Sayo, a poultry farmer, encouraged her fellow ladies to get into agriculture and earn from it to improve their livelihood.
