Governors of counties under the North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB) have called for concerted effort from all stakeholders in order to tap on the enormous tourism potential in the region.
Through their Chairman, Stephen Sang (Nandi Governor) they noted that the counties of Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana and Samburu have a huge potential in agro-tourism, sports tourism and cultural tourism which can transform the area.
Sang made the call during the 5th edition of Kirdam Half Marathon in Kabarnet town where he challenged both levels of government and other partners to develop a tourism product for the region which is known for its unique natural sceneries, wildlife and diverse ethnic cultures.
He stated that his dream is to have a tourism circuit across the eight counties which can attract local and foreign visitors to come and enjoy the wonderful tourism opportunities that the North Rift region can offer.
“There are a lot to be seen in our region and we are going to work together to build on that, the Noreb chairman said.
Sang who was hosted by Governor Benjamin Cheboi and Baringo Central Member of Parliament (MP), Joshua Kandie, recognized sports men and women from the region who apart from representing the country in international events, have come back to invest in their homeland.
The governor called for a clear roadmap in establishing sports facilities and infrastructure in the region in order to accommodate more talents.
His sentiments were echoed by Baringo governor who stated that his administration has prioritized on the establishment of stadiums, athletics camps and cultural centres across the 30 Wards of the county.
Cheboi mentioned Sirwa, Kapkiai, Ossen athletics camps as some of the sporting facilities whose construction is ongoing adding that it will support both experienced runners and young talents from the region who have been training in neighbouring Elgeyo Marakwet and Uasin Gishu counties.
He revealed that plans are underway for the construction of roads along the natural attractions within the county in order to open up the area for visitors.
The Baringo Central MP in his remarks acknowledged the warm reception by Baringo people to visitors especially his German friends who he noted have really enjoyed the hospitality from leaders and local communities.
Kandie said he is optimistic that the region will soon realize mutual growth and sustainable development from tourism opportunities.
