Rubik’s Cubin Kenya, a federation promoting Rubik’s Cube speed-solving as a competitive sport has intensified efforts to grow the mind sport beyond Nairobi.
The federation has taken an awareness campaign to Isiolo County as part of a nationwide expansion drive.
The organization, which has been promoting the global sport in Nairobi for the past 10 years, is now working to establish its presence across all 47 counties.
Over the last two months, the federation has been engaging learners in Isiolo through a community-based initiative dubbed ‘Isiolo Rubik’s Cube in Community.’
In partnership with local schools including Little Angels Academy, the federation is integrating Rubik’s Cube activities into co-curricular programmes.
The initiative aims to introduce learners to speed cubing in solving the cube puzzle using the shortest time possible while nurturing cognitive development.
The three schools, Little Angels Academy, Fountain Christian and Ripples International Schools participated in a beginners’ speed-cubing competition organized as part of the outreach programme. Pupils were rated based on their solving speed and understanding of basic techniques.
Speaking during the event at a hotel in Isiolo town, Rubik’s Cubing Kenya official Samuel Kamau said the programme combines mental and physical engagement, helping to sharpen problem-solving skills and enhance memory among learners.
“The game involves manipulation of the cubes, while tackling classic puzzles. It boosts brain power, stimulates critical thinking and improves concentration,” said Kamau.
The competition drew pupils, teachers, parents and other education stakeholders, highlighting growing interest in the sport within the region. Participants were awarded certificates of recognition for their efforts.
Kamau and participating teachers urged more schools and parents to enroll their children in the programme to enable them benefit early from the cognitive and competitive advantages associated with speed cubing.
The federation is currently engaging the Ministry of Education in discussions, aimed at formally integrating Rubik’s Cube sport into school curricula across the country.
According to Kamau, the sport is gaining momentum globally and across Africa, and was optimistic the Rubik’s Cubin Kenya will achieve grassroots expansion to nurture a generation of competitive cubers, while strengthening learners’ academic and life skills.
