Leaders oppose planned June 25 demonstrations

A section of leaders in Nyanza region has declared support for the government and urged Kenyans to reject planned street demonstrations scheduled for June 25, describing the protests as misguided and detrimental to development.

The leaders made the appeal in Kochia, Rangwe Constituency during a fundraising event where they were unanimous that dialogue and institutional processes offer a better avenue for addressing national concerns.

The event brought together several senior government and political figures, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and a host of elected leaders from Nyanza region.

Addressing members of the public, Mbadi criticized leaders he said had left the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and were now mobilizing support for the demonstrations.

He criticized what he described as attempts by some political figures to misrepresent the contents of the national budget presented on June 11 in Parliament.

“These leaders are moving around the country misinforming Kenyans about a budget they have not even read,” Mbadi said, adding that the budget contains provisions aimed at supporting young people, farmers and county governments.

Mbadi urged citizens to address budget concerns through Parliament and public participation forums instead of resorting to street protests, reiterating that demonstrations would not provide solutions to economic challenges.

“The budget is available for all Kenyans to read. Public debate should be informed by facts and conducted through proper channels,” he said.

Suna East MP Junet Mohamed also criticized the planned protests, accusing some opposition leaders of exploiting public dissatisfaction for political purposes.

He specifically took issue with Siaya Governor James Orengo and his allies, claiming they were encouraging unrest instead of constructive engagement.

“Planning chaos on June 25 is so low of those leaders. You cannot claim to love the people while leading them into destruction. Luo Nyanza has suffered for years because of this kind of politics,” Junet said.

Dr. Omollo on the other hand emphasized the importance of unity among leaders in the region, saying political divisions often undermine development efforts.

“Our unity as Luo leaders is our strength. When we speak in one voice, the region benefits. When we are divided, we lose,” he said.

The PS added that security agencies would remain vigilant to prevent destruction of property and maintain public order during any demonstrations.

Other leaders present including Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, Kasipul MP Boyd Were, and Kabondo Kasipul MP Eve Obara, expressed support for peaceful engagement and dialogue as the preferred means of resolving national issues.

Kaluma argued that economic challenges facing Kenyans require policy interventions rather than confrontation.

“Solutions to the high cost of living will come through sound policies, dialogue, and effective governance,” he said.

The leaders urged residents to maintain peace and support ongoing development initiatives in the region.
