County celebrates progress in the inclusion of PWDs

The County Government of Tharaka Nithi has reaffirmed its commitment for inclusion of the concerns and the interests of persons with disabilities.

The County Executive Committee Member for Children, Gender and Social Services, Karimi Kelly enumerated the progress made in making public spaces fully accessible to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

Speaking during the International Day for PWDs, the CECM said the county had made remarkable strides, noting that many newly constructed houses are now disability-friendly, reflecting growing awareness and compliance with inclusive building standards.

She further commended the health sector, saying hospitals across the county have established clear pathways and access points for PWDs, ensuring dignified movement and service delivery.

She added that ECDE classes are now designed to be disability-friendly, highlighting the county’s efforts to ensure every public facility accommodates the needs of all residents.

Ms Kelly stressed the fact that disability inclusion must remain a priority in every sector of development. “Disability is not inability. PWDs possess immense potential that must be supported and celebrated,” said Ms Kelly.

She clarified that her department uses disability assessment tools and inclusion lenses to ensure that disability considerations are integrated into all county projects. She urged local leaders and PWD representatives to remain proactive in understanding and addressing the needs of their members.

“We may not follow up on every individual, but it is the responsibility of each leader to know what persons with disabilities in their area require,” she noted.

She encouraged PWD leaders to report any cases of mistreatment or neglect to the Department of Gender, saying the county works closely with the Department of Health to ensure they receive necessary medical support and do not suffer in silence.

She further announced that starting February next year, the county will deploy doctors to conduct disability assessments at the grassroots, enabling residents to obtain disability cards more easily to enable them access government support promptly.
